Mitchell had surgery over the summer for blood on the brain, which happened after he fell while on vacation and suffered a concussion. "This was a difficult decision and I know the timing is not ideal, but I do not feel I can give the job what it requires at this time." Barnhart, I have decided to retire from coaching and effectively have resigned as head coach at Kentucky," Mitchell said in a statement. "After much conversation with my family and Mr. Mitchell, with a record of 303-133 at Kentucky, is the winningest coach in the program's history. After going 17-16 and finishing 5th in the SEC in 2007-8 and 16-16 in 2008-9, the Wildcats made a large jump in 2009-10 when they finished 28-8 and second in the conference. In his three plus years as Wildcat’s head coach, Mitchell’s teams have largely been mediocre but there were major signs of progress last season. Mitchell’s performance in his two seasons at Morehead was mediocre at best (he posted a 16-13 record in 2005-6 and a 14-16 record in 2006-7) but Kentucky was apparently convinced that this was due to his inability to recruit talent to Morehead State because they offered him their coaching job in the 2007 offseason. ![]() His performance there convinced Morehead State to hire him as their head coach in 2005. He held this post for three years then moved on to an assistant’s post at Kentucky.
